10 Years of Blogging

Somehow I managed to let a major blogging milestone slip past me in the last two weeks...January 7 marked ten years of blogging for me.  TEN. YEARS.  Holy cow...  It's hard to summarize everything that happened in those ten years, but ultimately a lot has changed, and I do appreciate returning to this little corner I've created.  It's my muse, my yearbook of sorts, marking special occasions, milestones, pitfalls and highlights in my life.

These days, though I aspire for more, posts are fewer and far between.  Many bloggers I followed in 2008 have since retired or taken hiatus, but I sincerely still love it.  I always loved writing, perhaps because it's just one of those things that just flows to me. And though this blogging community has evolved significantly from those early beginnings of the late 2000's, it's still a space I find delight in returning to, time and time again.  It's also exciting to see how some of my virtual friends have flourished.  For example, I began reading Cup of Jo when it bore its original bare bones template, and Joanna and I used to comment regularly on each other's blogs, and these days, she's a household name garnering millions of followers.   I've enjoyed this community of blog friends, maintaining virtual friendships, some which have even translated to real life (Ashlee and Vivian).

So here it is.  10 Years!  Happy Birthday little blog.  I'm glad you're here.

Weekend Baking: Birthday Cake (Gluten Free, Dairy Free)

Was channeling my inner domestic goddess this weekend as I made two birthday cakes from scratch for my son's birthday party.  For the majority of our gluten and dairy eating guests - my son included, I made this delicious chocolate cake which is my go-to for birthdays, topped with this peanut butter frosting.

Since my best friend was in town (who's been GF/DF for years) and not wanting to miss out on the cake festivities myself, I made this gluten and dairy free chocolate cake with coconut cream frosting (note: recipe reads as vegan, but I subbed 4 flax eggs with 4 eggs).  Not trying to toot my own horn, but the cake was pretty delicious!  Highly recommend for anyone with dietary restrictions that just wants a real honest to goodness moist and flavorful chocolate cake that tastes like chocolate cake!

Happy Birthday Blog

Happy birthday little blog of mine.  Today you are 9 years old.  NINE!  How did that happen?  One day back in 2008 I decided it was a good day for you to be born, and my how you've grown.

What has happened in those nine years, soooo much.
Recovered from the break up of a long relationship.
Was supported, loved, and lifted up by my friends.
Enjoyed being single.
Shared many memorable LOST nights and unforgettable nights out with my friends.
Met a nice boy at a dive bar, had a magical summer together.
Fell in love.
Bought a house!  Moved in together.
Got engaged.  Planned a wedding.  Got married!
Honeymooned.  Vacationed with friends.  Drank lots of wine.
Got pregnant! Had our darling girl.
Learned how to balance motherhood and work.
Sold our house.  Moved into a condo while searching for a new house.
Stars aligned and bought our new house.
Continued learning how to balance parenting and work.
Watched our friends marry friends. Traveled the world.
Became an aunt.  Twice!
Got pregnant again! Had our darling son.
Became a stay-at-home mom.
And so much more...

A few of you have been around for a while, and I'm grateful for you.  Many of you might be new or just dropping by.  I know my posts have diminished, and I've steered away from putting my kids on social media into more safe territory like recipes, home decor, and favorite things.  But thanks for being here.

And cheers to the lovely little things in your life.  Happy 9th my dear!

Birthday

Monday was my birthday.  We were jet setters and spent the long weekend in the Grand Cayman celebrating our close friends' wedding.  My birthday was spent eating fish curry at a roadside shack right on the beach, swimming in the blue waters of 7 Mile Beach, searching for sea glass, and toasting with chilled CayBrews among friends.  Aside from the fact that I was thousands of miles away from my sweet daughter, it was pretty perfect.

While I'm already an ankle deep into my thirties, but this seems like a good quote to have in my back pocket for the rest of the thirty something journey.

"I was once told, when you turn 30, you turn French...  When one hits her 30's, she knows where she's going in life and what looks great on her."

1st Birthday Party

How is it that my baby is already ONE?!  We celebrated her first birthday last weekend amidst family and a few close friends.  Here are some details from her party!
Originally I was going for a giraffe theme, since she LOVES giraffes, however that morphed into a jungle theme once I discovered these jungle invites by Tiny Prints.
She sported this darling birthday t-shirt, paired with this polka dotted head band.  Doesn't she look adorable?  With her polka-dotted jeans, knotted tee, and headband, she really rocked her "hipster" look.
We did a smash cake, but this was the reaction we got when she sampled the frosting…
Guests dined on lunch, followed by giraffe topped cupcakes

All in all, it was a spectacular party!  The sun came out just in time for cake and singing.  Happy birthday baby girl, we love you to the moon and back!

30

It's been such a whirlwind week, I haven't even had a moment to write about my birthday!  Last Saturday I turned 30 (gasp!).  I celebrated with my besties at a friend's cabin in Leavenworth, Washington, a charming, German-inspired town, blanketed in snow.

On Saturday, my actual birthday, I woke up to the house covered in shiny, Happy 30th streamers, and bedazzled decorations (all coordinated by my wonderful husband).  The rest of our friends arrived, making a total of 13, and we spent the day lounging with gossip magazines, taking leisurely walks in the snow while boys played an inventive game of basket-football.  Our plan for dinner was to do a progressive around-the-world dinner, starting at 6:00 with Asia, 7:00 Europe, 8:00 Central/South America, and 9:00 America.  Needless to say there was plenty of food and beverage options.

We had just started digging into our Asian appetizers (spicy chicken lettuce wraps, spring rolls with dipping sauces, and mai tais), when a surprise walked in.  My parents, sister, and her boyfriend walked in the kitchen and yelled SURPRISE!  Surprise indeed!  Katie and Greg had flown up from LA for the weekend and my parents drove them over, all to surprise us for my birthday dinner!  We had cake and sang happy birthday, among other festive songs, and had a raucous good time!

All in all, it was one of the best birthdays ever.  I can tell that 30 is going to be a great year!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to my handsome husband!  I'm so happy you are in my life.  It's been just 5 months since we were married, and I can't wait for all the months and years to follow!

We'll be celebrating with a birthday dinner tonight  at comfort food restaurant of his choosing - just the two of us.  Can't wait to celebrate you!

I love you, love you!

One Crazy Week

Hello out there!  Phew, this has been one crazy week.  A little bit draining, emotionally exhausting,  and oh boy, am I glad it is Friday!

My husband's birthday is next Monday so we're going out tonight to celebrate with friends. And, in honor of the commencement of March Madness, we're having a jersey party (as in sports jerseys, not Jersey Shore, just to be clear).  Should be a fun, casual evening with friends and family.
I'm excited!

Happy Belated Birthday

I'm a bad sister.  Thursday was a crazy day, and I unfortunately didn't have an spare minute to post a *happy birthday* post to my littlest sister on her special day.  She's turning 23, I can't believe it!

Happy (Belated) Birthday sis!  We can't wait to celebrate next week. 143.

Happy Birthday Mom!

It's my moms birthday today!  My mom is the coolest, quirkiest, most hilarious and wonderful mother I could ever ask for.  I can always count on her to make me laugh or dance around and be sing spontaneous silly songs.  You're the best!  Happy Birthday Mom!  I love you.  ♥

Can't wait to celebrate with you tonight!

Winter Weekend

After 3 -1/2 days without leaving the house, I was very, very happy to welcome the rain. Snow days are always enjoyable for a while, until cabin fever ensues.

Our snowy turned slushy turned rainy weekend was pretty low key. We had an impromptu birthday dinner with some friends at Crow on Friday night, when my plans for dinner with my family fell through due to snowy roads. Delicious dinner, followed by chips + guacamole, margaritas, and a few celebratory tequila shots among friends at a nearby bar - and all of a sudden, 29 doesn't feel so old after all. Happy Birthday to me.

How was your weekend?

It's My Birthday

It's my birthday!
I can hardly believe it is here again. Our snow adventure continues, and since our 6-ish inches have not thawed, and temperatures have plummeted - there is no school again today. This is a pleasant surprise, since I wasn't originally supposed to have my birthday off! It's funny because looking back, I've had a snow day on my birthday at least 4 times, all while living in a city where it rarely snows.

My husband has declared he will be making breakfast in bed for me - yippee! He also told me last night that he plans to bake me a birthday cake - this is a first! I'm hoping the slick roads begin to thaw, but if I'm house bound, a movie-marathon birthday wouldn't be so bad, right? In the evening, weather depending, we have dinner plans, just the two of us.

Here's to the last year of my twenties, wow does that make me feel old. It feels like it is going to be a good year!

Happy Birthday Blog!

Happy Birthday blog!
I can't believe you are 4 years old today, wow how time flies!
This blog has been a creative outlet for me to air my thoughts, share little bits of my life and loves, and get to know others out there in other parts of the world. I love being able to look back through old posts and see a snapshot of what I was doing, thinking, and spending my time doing many moons ago.

Happy Birthday blog, these past 4 years have been quite memorable, I'm eagerly looking forward to those to come!

Happy Birthday Katie!

Happy Birthday Katie! It's my sister's birthday today! I wish we were able to celebrate together but we're currently 2 states apart. Guess we'll have to same our birthday celebrating and double up at the wedding! Happy Happy Birthday, go out and live it up! I love you!

P.S. Your present should arrive by Monday!

Weekend o' Birthdays

This weekend was packed with birthday festivities. Friday night, my fiance and I went out for one my best friend's boyfriend's birthday at his fave Capitol Hill bar, celebrating with pitchers of Blue Moon, games of shuffleboard, and good conversation.

Saturday we attended a "booze cruise" birthday bash for my friend Jessica's boyfriend. While the weather didn't cooperate, we still had a great time cruising Lake Union on a chartered boat, taking in the sights of Seattle by night, before heading to another bar to continue the festivities.

Which means, by the end of the weekend, I was wiped! A lazy Sunday was just what I needed!

Birthday Brunch

Since my fiance is becoming quite the foodie, so it was only fitting that on his birthday, we head to a restaurant guaranteed to deliver delicious cuisine. Kingfish Cafe is a restaurant serving up Southern food and hospitality, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. The perfect spot for a sunny Saturday brunch. Dining here was a subtle flashback to our recent trip to New Orleans and the glory that is Southern food.

The brunch at Kingfish amazingly rich and filling - so if you go, definitely go hungry! We ordered the crabcake dewey with herbed hollendaise and good glory grits for the birthday boy. All in all, a great start to a great day.

B enjoyed the rest of the rest of his birthday inviting a few friends over to hang out, juggling a few rounds of cornhole in our yard with the March Madness tournament. As dusk settled in, we ordered pizzas and headed to our local watering hole for some Big Buck Hunter and shuffleboard. This was literally his perfect birthday; easygoing afternoon, sports, and good friends.

Happy Weekend

Thank goodness it's Friday! I don't know about you, but this has been one LONG week! Now, my report cards are in, it's pajama day at school, and I'm ready to sleep in tomorrow! Plus, it's my fiance's birthday tomorrow, so we're excited to celebrate with a Southern brunch, fancy dinner, and drinks with friends. Have a fab weekend!

Birthday Girl

It's my birthday today! I can't believe I'm in my late twenties, (eek) it sounds so old! Today I'm looking forward to a fun day at school, followed by hot yoga, then dinner with my family at fab sushi restaurant I've been wanting to try. Happy birthday to me!
