Southern Comfort

Before I parted with my DVR this weekend, I watched an episode of Samantha Brown: Passport to Great Weekends, and I now have this serious craving to visit the Deep South. I'm a West Coast girl - born in Southern California and raised between there and Seattle, so the Southern experience is foreign to me. I've been to Florida, and navigated my way from Virginia up North, and aside form a week in Nashville in 7th grade, that's about as South as I've been.

Now I am very intrigued by the likes of Charleston, South Carolina, and of course, these lovely photos of Savannah, Georgia. Life seems much different here, infused with Southern charm and traditions. None of this wearing jeans out to dinner as we casual West-coasters tend to make the norm.

For all you born and bred Southerners...if I venture on down to the South - what do y'all recommend I see?

Charleston and Savanah are gorgeous. But I wouldn't venture down in the summer if I were you, spring and fall are the best.

Charleston, Cumberland Island, and Savannah - My top three choices for a beautiful Southern experience. If you can only choose one - Charleston! I love everything about it.

Born and raised in Atlanta, and now I'm a SF girl.

Savanah and Charleston are both lovely choices for East Coast South, but being a Deep South Southern Belle I must recommend that you come visit my homestate of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans! Louisiana is like another country...I always heard this growing up but never understood until I moved to Florida for school.

I've always wanted to visit the south too. I hope Nick and I will go visit his family in Texas as some point.

I lived in Charleston for the past 6 and a half years (I actually just left a month ago) and it is wonderful. You will have a good time no matter where you go, it's such a beautiful and friendly city. Definitely get lunch at Jestine's Kitchen for the best soul food and Fleet Landing for great seafood in a really cool old naval building.

If you're thinking just deep south, it's got to be New Orleans, Charleston, and Savannah. If you can only pick one? New Orleans, baby!

I recently made a shooting trip to Savannah and Charleston and I have to say, I have never fallen in love with a place the way I did with Savannah. The charm and sweetness made me never want to leave. Forsyth Park, The Paris Market, Bonaventure Cemetery, Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House for lunch, any of the many local coffee houses and touring the Mercer Williams home were highlights. Nothing was better though than just walking around town. I am a photographer and you can view some of my Savannah Photographs on my blog here:

Enjoy your trip!

I've always had a fascination with the south, living in England and coming from New Zealand its along way to go, but I think it would be so worth it.
