Holiday Traditions

When I was little, one of my family's Christmas traditions was to drive up to a wooded tree farm, rent an axe for the day, and stomp around in our wellies searching for the perfect tree, it was a group effort. Since we're all grown up now and scattered across the country, that tradition sadly hasn't survived, but I hope to revive it with my own children someday.

What are your holiday traditions? What is something you do every year to ring in the season?

I love putting up the christmas tree and reading the night before christmas. We read it every year as a family on christmas eve. I really want to own the book we used (a pop-up book!) but sadly its now a collectors item and costs $150!

What a great tradition! We don't really have many traditions anymore (a bit sad, really). But a big one that I remember was our advent calendars - all three of us children had our own (mine was Nutcracker themed), and they were fabric wall hangings with little velcro plush items that we'd stick to it each day. We still have them, but don't wake up each day and immediately run and put them on!

My mother used to buy each of the three of us an ornament that would stay in a little bag on the mantel until Christmas Eve. That night, after the candlelit service at church we'd open the bags and discover our new ornaments for the year. It was her intention that when we left home, we'd each have our own little collection of ornaments to start decorating our own Christmas trees. It's something I'm doing now with my daughter.

My family throws a party the Saturday before Christmas. My parents have been doing this for 30 years now! Dad makes glögg, a tradtional Swedish mulled wine with vodka (lethal and delicious) and we make the whole Christmas julbord, the Christmas version of the smörgåsbord. It's so fun and I can't imagine the holidays without it!

deck out the house like a department store- always puts anyone in the holiday mood with our going overboard for Christmas. It may take hours, but it's worth it!
