Nicholos Cleves

This article. Man, does it deserve a read.  In the wake of all this senseless gun violence in the United States this fall, it's hard not to feel helpless, overwhelmed, anxious, deeply afraid, and devastated.

One thing that always comes to my mind is how quickly the news cycle moves on, jerking the spotlight away from those who were directly impacted.  The dead.  The wounded.  Why don't we ever hear about the wounded?  They may not have died in the tragedy, but their lives were forever changed.

For all of the nameless, faceless people that our world quantifies in numbered headlines, "26 dead," "9 dead," etc...these individuals who may not have been important people in your life, but are important people to somebody, this article sheds remembers the gift and circumstance of one man among many, someone who died too young, and is remembered by his heartbroken friends.

Baby Bump #2

So...I have some news to share!  We are expecting our 2nd child in mid-October.  I realize that's not too far off and I'm a little behind in getting this news up on the blog, but I'm attributing my delays in posting to traveling and chasing my darling toddler around.

We are waiting to find out whether the baby is a boy or girl - different than we did the first time around.  As such, deciding on a name is slightly more challenging, and we have yet to officially select names, but we do have a short list for both boy and girl names that we agree upon - most days.

We are very excited and happy to give our daughter a little brother or sister!

Diagnosing Ear Infections on Your Smart Phone

Have you heard of this?  As a parent of a toddler who has had 3+ ear infections in her 16 short months of life thus far, I am thoroughly intrigued by the Oto Home.  This handy dandy device attaches to your smartphone, where it takes a video of your child's ear drum.  Then, without visiting the doctor, you can send the video in for a diagnosis.

What will they think of next?!

How Many Bridesmaids?

Have you been a bridesmaid before?  I've had the honor and privilege of standing up in three weddings and I'm on deck for three more in the next year.  But this story takes the concept of bridesmaids to the next level!

A 26-year old dance teacher in England recently got married, and standing up beside her were...80 BRIDESMAIDS!!  80?!?!  WHAT?!  Granted, she's a dance teacher and many of the bridesmaids were her students, but dang!  Do you think they even all know each others names?  This makes 27 Dresses look like nothing!

How many bridesmaids did you have?

Thoughts

I feel like this blog merits a few words of solemnity in the wake of what happened in Boston yesterday.  Prior to the events, I had pre-written entries scheduled to post about trivial topics such as baking, baby supplies, and my favorite things.  But as this moment, those posts seem superfluous and thin in light of the grief people are feeling about this tragic event.

I always feel deeply saddened when something like this happens. I find myself fighting the overwhelming urge to wrap up in a thick blanket and disappear into the folds of my bed; torn between wanting to watch the news for information to explain said events, while simultaneously overcome by a sense of urgency to turn everything off and wish the reality of the sadness away.

For me these feelings feelings often linger for days, weeks, more...  The unrelenting and often overwhelming fear that we try to move on from as we choose to see the light over the darkness, while still knowing that the darkness still exists out there.

I just pray that somehow this wave of violence ceases, it seems to be so present in our lives these days, flooding our inboxes, feeds, and channels via every medium of news.  I can only hope and pray that my daughter will know a world where she feels safe, protected, and secure from the violence that was experienced by so many yesterday.  My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Google Reader No More

Have you heard?  Google Reader is retiring!
My first reaction was WHAT?!?! What am I going to do now?  I have countless blogs in my Google reader feed.  It's unbelievably convenient, efficient, and I love having the option to preview a post within reader rather than having to click every post open for comment.

So...what's up next?  I've been hearing about a few alternatives on other blogs, including feedly and bloglovin', but I haven't done my research yet to know which is best.

What are your thoughts?  Where are you storing your blog shortcuts next?

Coffee vs. Water

Do Seattleites drink more espresso than water?
What do you think?

Well...the answer is YES!  Check out this article, it's crazy to think that Seattleites truly consume more coffee than water on a daily basis.  While I'm not sure this is a fact to pride ourselves on, I can't say I'm terribly surprised.  Seattle is undoubtedly a coffee culture.  While other cities also enjoy their java, according to this article, Seattle is the only place in the US where this fact is true.

The article also states that part of this may be due to the fact that Seattleites avoid drinking bottled water (it's not green people).  In lieu of reaching for a bottle of water, we reach for coffee.

Thoughts?
What is the coffee culture like in your city?

Rachel's Wish

"On July 23, 2011, nine-year-old Rachel Beckwith was killed in a tragic car accident on highway I-90 near Seattle, Washington. After her death, thousands of people all around the world started donating to her mycharity: water fundraising page, and over the course of a month, raised over $1.2 million in Rachel’s honor. That money is now helping 60,000 people get access to clean water.
It's been exactly a year since the accident. In honor of the anniversary, Rachel’s mom, Samantha, and her grandparents, Richard and Roseanne, visit Ethiopia with charity: water and meet some of the people Rachel helped." - quoted from Vimeo
I saw this video posted on facebook, and it immediately brought tears to my eyes.  It's an emotional, moving story about how one person can make a difference.  If you have 5 minutes, I encourage you to take the time to watch this.

Seattle Gets Even Greener

Big news here in Seattle! The Seattle City Council voted to ban plastic bags in grocery stores and charge a 5-cent fee on paper bags. Looks like reusable bags for everyone is the way of the future!

I've already accrued my own stash of reusable tote bags, but I guess I shall be investing in some more! I already have my eye on this one...

Coffee Perks

Are you a coffee drinker? While I'm not a caffeine junkie, I do rely on my morning coffee to perk me up on the drive to school. I don't have a "usual" drink, I try and mix it up to keep things interesting.

And now, I have even more reason to continue drinking my morning coffee...according to a recent study, coffee cuts the depression rate in women. I knew I always felt a little better after that first sip of my morning brew! Pass the pumpkin spice latte please!

Japan

I've been thinking a lot about Japan lately. My heart goes out to the people and families who have been killed, injured, or displaced by this tragedy. It's can't even imagine what they are going through. Having just been to Japan this past summer, I feel more of a connection to this tragedy than I normally would. Immediately after hearing I checked facebook for updates and news from my friends living in Japan, and thankfully they were safe and sound. I know Japan will come back from this, but not without memory of the sadness that's occurred.

Sending my thoughts and prayers to this amazing country and all those affected by this earthquake and tsunami. Thinking of you.

Oscar Gold

So excited for the victories of Colin Firth and Natalie Portman for best actor and actress. For once I've actually seen and enjoyed the award winning movies (something I admit does not happen often). Colin Firth was so deserving, and his acceptance speech so collected and eloquent. And gotta say, I thought Miss Natalie really rocked the baby bump in a ball gown which does not seem an easy feat. Way to go, or in the words of the ho-hum host Anne Hathaway "Woohoo!"

Who were the big winners in your eyes?

Royal Reading

In preparation for the royal wedding, which is just around the corner on April 29, 2011, I've been doing a little light reading on the royal couple. Recommended to me by my friend Carol, I've been indulging in William and Kate: A Royal Love Story. Normally, I'm not one for historical biographies but since I'm looking forward to watching this historic wedding on TV, I'm brushing up on the royal couple.

P.S. Did I tell you this fun fact? My parents got married the year Princess Diana and Prince Charles got married...And I'm getting married the year of Prince William and Kate Middleton. What an exciting milestone for us to share!

Reasons I Love the Grammys

Discovering new bands like Mumford and Sons.

The appearance of Muppets when you least expect to see them.

The Facebook Movie

I just realized I never blogged about the last movie I saw - The Social Network, which despite actually knowing the title, I find myself consistently referring to as "The Facebook Movie." I didn't have high expectations for this movie, but I was entertained throughout and pleasantly surprised. For a movie all about computers, the plot was engaging, and the characters while not likable in the slightest (sans Eduardo), were well cast. (For anyone who's seen it, were the Winkelvoss twins not the dreamiest boys ever??).

The bf and I did a date enjoyed our dinner & a movie date night, dining at our fave burger joint, Red Mill Burgers, and then off to see the flick. Overall, I was very satisfied with the movie, I would even go so far as to say I'd even see it again...in the theater. And, it was an interesting vantage point for those of us who are members of facebook, a modern-day history lesson of sorts as to how we all got on there in the first place.

History Meet Technology

My friend sent me this article, it's very entertaining but also makes you wonder... "What if Historical Events had Facebook Statuses?" I sure know that would keep me much more up to speed on current events! Don't you think all those linked into would find themselves that much more aware and in the know about history?

Broadway Buzz

Guess what hit movie is being turned into a Broadway Musical in 2010??? Sleepless in Seattle!! I love, love, LOVED this movie, back in 1993 when it debuted and still today. Can't wait to see how this plays out on Broadway!

The Story of Bottled Water

This is a really interesting video about the truth behind bottled water, part of the series from "The Story of Stuff" Project. Take a look! I was surprised at their findings, good thing I'm a tap water girl at heart anyway.

Attention Twilight Fans

Twilight saga author Stephanie Meyer has just announced she will release a new book related to her famed series. Titled, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, details "the story of Bree Tanner, a character first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits. In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion." - B&N

I've already got my copy pre-ordered. And as I type that I sort of cringe - sometimes I can't believe myself and this silly obsession with vampire romance novels...
