Cookbook Crush: The Lost Kitchen

Have you heard of The Lost Kitchen?  It's a farm to table restaurant in Freedom, Maine that's become so hugely popular they only take reservations by written note. How clever is that?  The chef, Erin French changed to this reservation policy after seeing her demand outpaced her restaurant size.  Low and behold, she received 20,000 reservation requests!  Intrigued by this concept and her restaurant itself, I did some digging, and discovered The Lost Kitchen also has a cookbook, also titled The Lost Kitchen.

The cookbook catalogues her arduous journey to from a secret supper club to establishing the restaurant, only to be literally locked out and lose everything in a messy divorce.  I found her story extremely compelling, a bonus narrative to the pages upon pages of delicious farm fresh recipes.  Notably the rhubarb spoon cake, chamomile creme brûlée, and apple cider and rosemary sorbet (she does have more recipes than purely desserts, I assure you).

It's a cookbook I hadn't seen on any recent bestseller lists, or Amazon bookstore shelves, but one worthy of a read, or at least a timely flip through.

Cornwall

Have you ever been to Cornwall, England?  This is a region of England I wasn't too familiar with, and truth be told, was never much on my travel radar until this article in Bon Appetit magazine.  And now, after reading this article, in addition to rereading Joanna Goddard's nostalgic posts about vacationing on the Cornwall coast, I've definitely added it to my "must see" list.  The blustery bluffs, rocky beaches and salty sea, the abundance of fish and chips and English accents, just to name a few of my favorite things!

Ever been?  Doesn't it sound quaint and lovely?

What's a destination that you'd like to visit that was an unexpected addition to your list or somewhere that surprised you?

Cookbook Crush: Tasting Rome

My favorite country in Europe (of those I've been to) is easily Italy.  There is just something about it.  The air there feels...different, magical almost.  As if you can feel time slow down, just enough for to savor that last bite of pasta carbonara, that decadent mouthful of gelato.  In addition it's architectural charm, buzzing piazzas, stellar people watching, it is one of the only places where everything you order tastes amazing.  The last time I was there was 2009 and I dream of going back someday, mapping out imaginary itineraries in my head, perhaps taking in some of my favorites like Orvieto and Florence, and a few new gems, like San Gimingiano, Positano, and the Amalfi Coast.

In the meantime, we've been dabbling with bringing Rome into our kitchen, literally with this cookbook.  While many cookbooks boasting to speak of Italian flavors don't live up to their namesake, this one stands alone.  I read it several times and felt hungry after each successive read.

San Francisco Weekend in a Nutshell

This past weekend was my first weekend away from my sweet babe, and on a plane no less.  I flew to San Francisco for a quick weekend away to visit my best friend Jody.  It was such a much needed weekend to relax, recharge, and enjoy some quality girl time.

Upon arriving, we met up with Jody's husband and some other friends at Homestead in the Mission, for a stiff cocktail (I had the Paloma) to celebrate in regale in our friends Alex and Kostas' recent engagement.  Followed by a modern Vietnamese/Thai meal at Slanted Door in the historic Ferry Building.  It was a seriously superb meal; even the rice is amazing!  {Try the stir-fried organic chicken, chili-coconut eggplant, and green papaya salad}.  Plus they boast the eclectic dessert of sculpted cotton candy - we were tempted to order this ourselves to satisfy our inner children, but were perfectly satiated it would've been difficult to eat even one more bite!
The next morning we slept in (!!) before dining al fresco at Kitchen Story, which quite possibly might have been one of the best brunches of my life, I opted for the eggs Benedict accompanied by bacon wrapped asparagus, let me tell you, it was A-MAZING!  We considered ordering the bottomless mimosas - apparently a new San Francisco staple, but opted for singles as to encourage our activity for the day.

After brunch, we strolled around the Mission, Castro, refueling with some coffee at Stanza, before playing tourist and channeling our TGIF roots with a stop by the Alamo Square Park for a touristy photo opp, Full House flashback anyone?
After stopping by Whole Foods to pick up some sustenance, and picking our our favorite stoops and houses along the way, we met up with our friend Andy at Mission Dolores Park.  Mind you, did I tell you it was a beautiful beyond beautiful day.  The sky was cloudless, the sun warm and inviting, nothing of the typical fog or overcast haze San Francisco is famous for.  We settled in for some quality people watching with a blanket, a crisp bottle of Rose, and our own makeshift fruit platter.
After, we grabbed a quick snack at Regalio Rostecario - all the rose had me craving guacamole (and there's didn't dissapoint).  By now it was at least 7:00, and we slowly made our way back to Jody's house for a "homemade" Blue Apron meal, pinot, and a cheesy but hilarious at times romcom.  All in all a pretty perfect day!

On Sunday, after waking up early to an earthquake (!) - we cruised down to the Marina to explore a new nook of San Francisco, picking up a healthy breakfast and filling smoothie at The Planet Cafe, before enjoying yet another day of sun as we shopped Fillmore and the surrounding area.  I had a 3:40 flight, so we headed back to her apartment to pack, but not before another touristy stop to Tartine  -whose line moved surprisingly fast considering it snaked around the corner.  One pain au chocolat and a croissant to go, followed by a stroll back to her apartment in the middle of the road, courtesy of Sunday Streets.  We discovered this weekend street closure is an age-old San Francisco tradition where alternating neighborhoods close a main thoroughfare on Sundays, open only to pedestrian traffic.  The street was peppered with a few sidewalk sales, street performers with instruments, and children riding their bikes.  It was a nice change of pace and way to explore.

All in all - quite a full weekend of sightseeing, and so much fun catching up with my dearest friend!  Thanks so much Jods!

What's your favorite thing to do in San Francisco?  Do tell, I might just have to plan a return visit soon...

Traveling with Kids

After a successful three flights over the Christmas holiday with a 3-month old, and an inspiring boost of confidence from this video, I have a new hope and enthusiasm about the prospect of traveling the world with our kid(s) someday...
Happy New Year!

Road Trip!

This weekend my little family and I are off to Cannon Beach, Oregon to celebrate our 2-year wedding anniversary!  It's our baby's first road trip!  I'm excited to cruise the beach, enjoy some (hopefully) fog-free sunsets, and relax with my lovies.

Have a sweet weekend!

Sonoma Bachelorette Recap

Fourth of July weekend was an epic girls getaway to gorgeous Sonoma, California.  My best friend Jody is getting married in September, and 10 of us girls from across the country congregated in wine country to celebrate our beautiful bride.  We arrived on the fourth of July for dinner at Girl and the Fig, toured Sonoma's finest wineries all day Friday, laid by the pool soaking up the California sunshine on Saturday, and headed home after brunch on Sunday.  With a few bachelorette activities thrown in here and there, of course!  Here are some snapshots from our girlfriends getaway!

Feeling good this week.  My husband and I took advantage of the long, Memorial Day weekend and ventured to Vancouver, B.C., a short 2-hour drive North of Seattle.  The weather cooperated, and we were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city sans rain. We stayed downtown at the Sheraton Wall Centre Downtown.  Our room on the 30th floor with floor to ceiling windows boasted a spectacular view of the ocean and mountains beyond.  I'd highly recommend this hotel, as it was an ideal central location for sightseeing on foot.

Our first afternoon in town, we shopped Robson street and beyond, wandered through the Yaletown restaurant district and dined at the delicious Flying Pig - highly recommend!  On Sunday, we had brunch at the Twisted Fork on Granville for their famous banana stuffed brioche French toast (a pregnant woman's dream come true!).   Later, recharged by coffee and scones from Blenz, we took a leisurely drive and explored the depths of Stanley Park, the gargantuan expanse of greenery in Northwest Vancouver (also, the largest public park in Canada).  After a nap and a few hours of relaxation, we explored Davie street and capped off our last night at a little neighborhood Thai restaurant.

In between our walking and eating (seriously, it felt like we - at least I - was constantly eating), we had a great time relaxing, talking about our baby and future plans, and getting lost in a new city.  I wasn't sure a babymoon was a necessity, but having taken a weekend away, I'd recommend it to anyone.  It was nice to have a weekend just us before our we becomes three!

Vancouver Babymoon

My husband and I are headed to Vancouver , B.C. for Memorial Day weekend for a "babymoon" of sorts.  This won't be our first visit to Vancouver, but it has been a few years since we've combed the likes of Robson Street.  So, now is our opportunity to play tourist and treat ourselves to a fun weekend away before the baby comes.

Any recommendations of things to do, places to eat, things to see?  Would love some words of wisdom from any Vancouver "experts" out there!

Adventures in Snowshoeing

One our second to last day in Big Sky, my family took a break from skiing to create some fresh tracks via snowshoeing.  Think snowshoeing sounds like an easy workout?  Think again!  We hiked several trails, including "Bullwinkle" and "Creekside," through a snow cloaked national park.  Sure enough, the sky was blue and big, very fitting for this cozy town of the same name.  While we layered our clothes to stay warm, the bright shining sun warmed us as we hiked, illuminating the fluffy white snow.

The scenery was beautiful, quiet and pristine.  The green trees dappled with snow, branches boasting fingers of icicles, sometimes you just had to stop and look around to take it all in.  There's nothing quite like a winter wonderland.  Plus the fun of creating our own trail of fresh tracks as we cheerily joked, "Hi Ho, Hi Ho," along the trail, (seriously we did, my sister has an entertaining video to prove it).

Big Sky

My family and I are off to Big Sky, Montana today to enjoy some R & R mountainside.  Can't wait for the fresh mountain air, lazy nights in front of the fire, warm cozy socks, and some quality family time.

Enjoy President's Day weekend!  Hopefully it's a long one for you as well.

Snapshots of Cork

After Galway, we headed South to County Cork to spend a few days in Cork City.  We really enjoyed Cork City, partly because it was sunny during our entire stay!  The city has a completely different feel from Dublin.  We spent our days walking along the river, shopping, enjoying the English market, excellent restaurants, in addition to our our fabulous B&B!

Snapshots of Ireland: Galway & Around

We happened to be in Galway during the final leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, a 9-month long international sailing race around the world.  The celebration was a week long, and when we arrived in Galway, the festivities were already in full swing.  Galway's population of 85,000 swelled to just over a million for that week!  Streets were packed with people, there was dancing and drinking in the streets, and we found ourselves smack in the middle of all the action, it was crazy!  We woke up at 3 AM to cheer on the boats as they crossed the finish line for the final leg and docked in Galway Harbor.  It was quite an experience!
Foggy view from the Cliffs of Moher.
The race boats docking in the harbor after the final leg of the race.
The winning team of the Volvo Cup Race, celebrating at 5 AM!
The streets of Galway, packed after a night of celebrating.

Snapshots of Ireland: Dublin

So we've been home from our trip a week now and I figured it's high time I get to posting about our adventures in Ireland!!  My husband and I flew in and out of Dublin, and were in the country for 10 full days.   Here are some of our favorites from Dublin...
 Next up...Galway!

Ireland Bound

Suitcases are packed, passports ready to go...tomorrow we are off to Ireland!!  So excited to spend quality time with my husband, drink a few pints, and explore this lush land together.
I'll report back soon!

The Most Beautiful Place in the World

On Monday, a facebook acquaintance of mine posted this as her status, "Where is the MOST BEAUTIFUL place in the world?"  Intrigued, I scrolled down to view the comments and was amazed how many people responded, and how varied the answers were: Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Greek Islands, the Phi Phi Islands, Fiji, Hong Kong, the list went on and on.  I found myself jotting notes down from this list so I can add them to my wanderlust list!

After perusing, I thought to myself, what destination I would choose as the most beautiful?   Takayama, Japan?  Civita de Bagnorregio, Italy?  Dubrovnik, Croatia at sunset?  There really are so many beautiful places in the world, it's tough to pick one that resonates above them all!

So now I'm sending this out into the blog world to get your responses.
Where is the MOST BEAUTIFUL place in the world?
