Collecting Stories

I've always been one to write things down, starting with my first grade diary which is littered with snippets that are quite comical to me now, the daily report on what I ate for lunch, a random comment to sum up a week long adventure, "skiing is fun!" along with a few sporadic notations about boys, friends, and my sisters.

Fast forward 20+ years and here I am, still seeking to write everything down.  Except now, I rarely record anything as mundane as my daily lunch, and strive to find pockets to write down about my family.  The little sayings that pepper conversations with my imaginative 2-1/2 year old or the way it feels to cuddle in bed with both my kids at 8:00 on a Tuesday morning.

I've also come to seek and search out these stories with my family, beginning with my late grandfather.  I interviewed him once for one of my first college courses, Introduction to Folklore, a class I wouldn't have picked otherwise, but at at the time at University of Washington lumped courses for freshman into interest groups (referred to as FIGs), and my late decision to attend landed me with English 101, Drama 101, and Introduction to Folklore.

I begrudgingly attended class after class, learning about the history of the folk tale, the evolution of the story, and found myself mildly interested.  Our course culminated with our task of telling some else's story of our own, acting as the narrator to present said story with unbiased commentary, providing context if necessary.  I opted to interview my maternal grandfather, whose journey being left on the steps of the New York foundling hospital as an orphan baby to his career and prosperous career building churches in Los Angeles country was quite an inspirational one, at least what I had gleaned from his articulate anecdotes through the years.

In preparation, I found myself spending hours at a time in my grandparents condo, more time than I would typically spend with my grandparents during my social college years.  Fifteen years later, I find myself thinking back to these conversations, sitting alongside my grandparents as they reclined in their barcaloungers, sipping coffee and nibbling Sees candy while conversing about life, love, struggles, and triumphs.

My grandfather passed in 2013, right after the birth of my daughter, and sadly now these stories exist only in my final draft I printed for my assignment and a series of audio tapes.  I've made a multitude of excuses over the years as to why I haven't transcribed our additional conversations into words to share amongst our family.  I feel like this feeling was heightened significantly after the birth of my children, where I feel an overwhelming urge and desperation to document everything, capturing this one precious life we have and all of those joyful moments before they slip through my fingers, yet again.

So recently, I made the decision to enlist the help of Storyworth, so that my children will have the benefit, privilege, and access to the stories I grew up listening to, from my parents.  I first read about Storyworth via Kelle Hampton of Enjoying the Small Things, and was so smitten with the concept, I immediately purchased a book for my dad for Father's Day.  My father is someone who has worked tirelessly his entire life, his work ethic is stealthy and admirable.  Hence, when he does have free time, he tends to reply in concise one word texts or emails; yes. sure. absolutely. definitely.  I've been wanting to record his stories, while he is here, present, and able to share, and evade the wistful, "if only I'd written that down..." I've experienced with my grandfather.  That way, I can read them now, ask questions, inquire more, and connect over commonalities we may not have known to share.

Upon sharing the concept of Storyworth, my dad was surprisingly game, eager even! The format is simple enough, he receives an email once a week with questions I have approved or selected, such as "do you have any particular vivid memories of your grandparents," or "what advice would you give your great-grandchildren.  The questions that are direct, unassuming, and because they are delivered via email, are easy enough for a busy individual to answer without overthinking it.  Upon the culmination of 52 questions, one per week, I will receive all of his written responses in a keepsake book.  I'm pretty excited!

If this sounds interesting to you, go check out Storyworth!

Camera 101

Guess what?!

I got a new camera!  Thanks to all of your advice, suggestions, and words of wisdom.  I ended up going with a Nikon D5100, and I love it!  My husband and I spent last weekend playing with our new toy, fiddling with settings, shutter speed, aperture...I feel like I need to learn a whole new language to understand all of it, but I'm excited!!

Now I am looking for any helpful advice on how to best understand and utilize my camera to its fullest.  Any suggestions of books, youtube tutorials, or sites that you found helpful for getting to know your camera?

Sibling Love

I just stumbled across delightful photos by Jason of JLW Photography!  His personal blog documents his darling daughters' sibling love at its best.  I love their facial expressions, they are pitch perfect!  I've recently been intrigued by photo journal blogs such as these.  What a great way to document your children growing while simultaneously being accessible to family and friends far away.

Desperately Seeking Camera

I am in the market for a new camera.  I'm hoping to invest in a fancy-schmancy DSLR that I can use for years to come.  I'm often in awe of the focus and detail of photographs I see on other blogs, and thats what I am seeking, a camera that will allow me to really zoom, focus, and create art of out of life.

So...let's have it, your thoughts, recommendations, suggestions, and opinions.  If you do have any helpful hints, please let me know the make / model so I can research further!

Sneak Peek: Wedding Photos!

"The best romance is inside the marriage; the finest love stories come after the wedding, not before."
- Irving Stone

Bubble Art

Isn't this amazing? Famous landmarks reflected in bubbles. "In the summer of 2006, Tom Storm was traveling through Galway, Ireland, when he came upon the Galway Arts Festival. Huge bubbles suddenly surrounded him and he found them so beautiful and intriguing that he started snapping away. A few months later, as Tom was rediscovering these photos, something caught his eye. In the bubbles' reflections, he found incredibly crisp detail. "I found there was a whole world within the bubble, a perfect world in focus," Tom said." - My Modern Met

Wednesday Pretty

What a fun wedding photo! I just love the heart-shaped balloons. What a photograph it would be to capture all of these balloons released at once, floating up into the sky? I totally want to do something like this at our wedding...

Engagement Photo Inspiration

We booked a photographer for our wedding!! I am so smitten with them and thrilled they had our date free. Since I'm a total list maker, being able to check to-do's off my wedding list is so exciting. As with my wedding excitement grows, combined with the luxury of being on Winter Break, I'm reading wedding blogs like it's my J.O.B.!

But of course before the wedding photos comes the engagement photos. I've got about a hundred links in my favorite tab on my web browser. Here's one of my faves, such a darling engagement session. Perfect for a holiday engagement!

Natural Wonder

Get this: A tuxedoless penguin was found on the island of St. George off the coast of Antarctica. National Geographic reported that "The all black penguin is an extremely rare find, a “one-in-a-zillion” chance...The tuxedo look is standard feature for the king penguin, and it is rare that a penguin sheds its formal wear for a photo opportunity. What makes this bird even more special, is that no trace of white feather can be seen anywhere on his body."

Nature never ceases to surprise me!

Photo Future

I am a scrapbook (dare I say the word...) whore. I have so many scrapbooks filled to the brim with photos + flair, dating back to middle school, it's not even funny. Being the scrapbook fiend that I am, I'm also now desperately trying to transfer precious family's photos from the pre-digital age into digitized form for safe keeping. As you know if you've tried, the scanner is a labor-intensive tool, and a mere 100 photos could take an hour...

While browsing this month's Real Simple, I came upon a startling discovery. There is a website - ScanCafe.com where you can send your photographs and get them back in digitized form. They even guarantee the quality and safety of your photos because don't we know how these memories are truly one of a kind and irreplacable. Although, I think I'm willing to risk it, considering all photos are scanned by hand, and you can fit 1,200 images to a DVD...Pretty intriguing.

Anyone ever used this site before? I'm curious to learn more...

Indian Wedding

Have you ever been to an Indian wedding? I never have, but am so intrigued by all the colorful traditions. I'm in love with all of these gorgeous photos from this Indian wedding.

One of my boyfriend's best friends from college is Indian and their group of friends has been eagerly waiting for the day he decides to get married so they can all attend a party of such colorful grandeur.

I'm Now The Proud Owner of...

...this fantastic little camera, the Canon Powershot SX10 IS. I toyed with the idea of upgrading to a Nikon D60 SLR, but inevitably decided on this lovely little Canon, in hopes that I'll eventually be earning fancy photographer status.

With my upcoming European adventure just around the corner, I thought it time to invest in an upgrade. I'm incredibly excited about my new purchase, and have been testing it out incessantly acquiring the little guy Sunday evening. Anyone else a proud owner?

Paris Dreaming

These photographs make me long to visit Paris!

Candy Colored

Love this print, the candy colored Ferris wheel is perfection. This reminds me of a summer day at the fair. Makes me feel like I should be nibbling cotton candy and an elephant ear simultaneously, while wearing cutoff shorts in line for the roller coaster.

Note to self - remember...summer is just around the corner!

Blue

My photo club's assignment this week is BLUE. Photos of anything and everything associated with the color. I never realized how few blue things there are (both artificial and in nature) until I was faced with a 5-day assignment! Thus far, I've photographed tiny blue flowers, blue tiles in the sidewalk, and the sky's reflection in the hood of my blue car. That's all I got.

Any other ideas? I'm looking for inspiration in any avenue I can get!
