Holiday Entertainment

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is playing board games. I LOVE board games, and playing together has become a holiday tradition in our family.

Our reliable favorites include: Scrabble, Cranium, Catchphrase, and my ultimate #1 favorite - Scattergories! LOVE that game! My sisters and I play this often and always try and outdo each other with double-letter answers, a la "French Fries," and "Farrah Fawcett."

My husband comes from a family that didn't grow up playing board games on holidays religiously, and I'm determined to somehow insert my traditions into our his family's Christmas in Michigan this year. Any suggestions how I do this? I'm a tad afraid I'm going to come off as the overly-competitive-board-game-playing-daughter-in-law... Thoughts?

  1. I come from a board-game playing family too. Our favorites are scrabble, cranium, and lately our new favorite is apples to apples. So fun! Scattergories is a good one too - I haven't played that one in a while. I'd say start with just a couple people who you think would be up for a game, and then you could try to pull others in - don't try to force it on everyone if they're not interested. Once they see the fun you're having, hopefully they'll want to join in! Have a great time!

  2. We are a board game family too! I have a HUGE family as well and we are all sort of shouting at the same time. The first few years Andy would sort of sit there on the side lines, but now he has accepted his fate and is shouting right along with us now. Our new favorite is Bezzer Wizzer. It's a great trivia game! It's fast paced too!

Wait til everyone has a few glasses of wine and they should play willingly!

  7. I love scattegories!! I just got the game at gift exchange this weekend and I can't wait to bring it out on christmas eve.
I think if you just bring a game along and set it out people will be open to playing it... who doesn't love board games?!
