Reader Bug

Read any good books lately?

I'm polishing off Netherland, one of the NY Times top picks for 2008, debating whether or not to open up a recommendation from my mom, The Tortilla Curtain, and of course still dabbling with the 4th book of the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn...

In the meantime looking to add some other "must reads" to my goodreads list, any suggestions? I'm welcome to recommendations for children's books as well, after all, the teacher is always on the prowl for another great read!

  1. I've just started reading the Twilight series (again), but I've also got my little hands on an iPhone application that lets you download classic eBooks...so I'm going to get into a little Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde...all the authors I wish I had to read in high school instead of the terrible obscure novels our English coordinator seemed to favour.

  2. I've taken to doing posts on books over at my blog, if you want to check it out.

I'm also finishing up reading Devil in the White City- nonfiction but it reads like a novel. It's about the Chicago Columbian Exposition in the 1890s and is very good.

  3. I'm reading The Book Thief too! And it's great.

Other books that you MUST read if you haven't yet are: People of the Book, Water for Elephants, Bel Canto, Carter Beats the Devil, The Samurai Garden, and The Golden Compass series.

I also read The Host by Stephenie Meyer and loved it. It was like Twilight, but with a moral dilemma that I found truly challenging (as much fun as the Twilight books were, sometimes I wanted to strangle Bella for being so obsessive and silly about her first boyfriend).

Here's a blog post I did on my 2008 books...oh! I forgot to mention Gods Behaving Badly! Such a fun, light read.

  5. Recently, I've really enjoyed Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated--as well as his wife Nicole Krauss's The History of Love (don't you just love talented couples?). Also, I liked Lee Martin's The Bright Forever--and anything by Lorrie Moore. I just went to the library today, so I have books on the brain too!

one of the best books i've read in ages (finished it last year but it's still in my head!) was 'heyday' by kurt anderson. it's epic--a must read for sure!

  9. I recently finished "Animal Vegetable Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver, and "The World Without Us" by... ??? Both non-fiction. My fiction read was "Belong to Me" by Marisa de los Santos (I think), which was a sequel to "Love walked in". All good.

  10. Ooh, I am on Breaking Dawn right now. I've actually been just several chapters away from finishing it for some time. For some reason I just can't bring myself to finish it which is so strange considering I couldn't put the other 3 down. Maybe because it'll all be over after this one?
